CRI, Kelvin & Beam Angle: Understanding the Language of Light

Two lights can have the same wattage and still make a space look completely different.

That’s because great lighting isn’t just about brightness. CRI, Kelvin and Beam Angle determine how colours appear, how a space feels and where the light falls.

CRI: How True Do Colours Look?

CRI (Colour Rendering Index) indicates how accurately a light source reveals colours compared with a reference light source.

A higher CRI helps materials, finishes, artwork and fabrics appear more natural and true to their actual colours.

CRI 80+ — Suitable for many general architectural applications.CRI 90+ — Preferred where accurate colour representation is especially important, such as premium residences, retail, hospitality and galleries.

When you've carefully selected every material in a space, the right light ensures you actually see it as intended.

Kelvin: How Does the Light Feel?

Kelvin (K) describes the colour temperature of light. Lower values appear warmer, while higher values appear cooler.

2700K–3000K — WarmSoft and inviting. Ideal for homes, restaurants and hospitality spaces.

4000K — Neutral

Clean and balanced. Commonly used in offices, retail and workspaces.

5000K–6500K — Cool Crisp and day light-like. Often suited to task-oriented, commercial and utility environments.

The architecture can remain exactly the same, but changing the Kelvin can completely transform its mood.

Beam Angle: Where Does the Light Go?

Beam angle determines how narrow or wide the light spreads.

8° — Precise, dramatic highlighting15° — Focused accent lighting24° — Controlled yet broader illumination38° — Softer, wider distribution50° — Broad, more uniform illumination

A narrow beam can draw attention to artwork or an architectural detail, while a wider beam can illuminate an entire surface.

Three Details. One Complete Experience.

Think of it simply:

CRI determines how accurately you see the space.Kelvin determines how warm or cool it feels.Beam Angle determines where your attention goes.

Together, they shape the way architecture, materials and interiors are experienced.

At TRUE, we believe great lighting goes beyond illuminating a space. It’s about understanding exactly how that light should look, feel and perform.

TRUE — Pure Performance.
